Minnesota's Data Center Boom: What It Means for Your Business
Minnesota's data center boom is pulling more new electricity demand onto the grid than the state has seen in a generation, and it's changing the math for every business that shares that grid with them. It probably won't cause blackouts at your building next week, but it does mean tighter capacity margins, new utility rate structures built around a handful of enormous customers, and less room for error if your own electrical system is already stretched thin. The scale of what's coming is worth understanding in plain numbers. Meta is building Minnesota's first mega data center in Rosemount, Amazon and Microsoft have bought land near Xcel's soon-to-retire coal plant in Becker, and a Colorado developer has advanced a project in Farmington while eyeing sites in Rosemount and Cannon Falls. Other companies are pursuing sites in Chaska, Faribault, North Mankato, and Hampton. If even a chunk of that pipeline gets built, it could pull as much electricity as every home in Minnesota combined. Separately, Fresh Energy has tracked twelve publicly known data center projects as of January that would add roughly 1,120 megawatts of new capacity to a state that currently runs only about 43 megawatts across its existing data centers.
Xcel Energy, which serves most of the Twin Cities, expects Minnesota's share of this new demand to run around 1,300 megawatts over the next seven to eight years, with data centers alone accounting for about half of Xcel's projected 5% annual sales growth through 2029. That's a fast pace of load growth for a grid that was mostly sized around slow, steady residential and commercial growth for decades.
The grid is tighter than it used to be
Minnesota belongs to a 15-state regional grid, and reporting this year noted that lagging power supply across that region has already spurred warnings of blackout risk heading into peak summer demand. That's good news in the sense that regulators are trying to keep data center costs off your electric bill. There's an upside: Xcel wants to put batteries at businesses like yours
In April 2026, the Public Utilities Commission approved Xcel's Capacity*Connect program, a first-of-its-kind arrangement in which Xcel will deploy up to 200 megawatts of battery storage, in blocks of roughly 1 to 3 megawatts, at local businesses, commercial and industrial sites, and nonprofits across its Minnesota territory by 2028. Sites that host a battery get compensated for it, while Xcel gets a way to relieve local grid constraints without building an entirely new substation.
