The Federal EV Charger Tax Credit Just Expired: Now What?

The federal EV charger tax credit, officially Section 30C, ended on June 30, 2026, and it isn't coming back. If your charger goes in after that date, there's no 30% write-off waiting for you at tax time, whether it's a $1,000 residential credit or the much larger commercial version. The good news for Twin Cities homeowners and businesses: several Xcel Energy and co-op rebates are still very much alive, and a properly sized EV charger installation still pencils out even without Uncle Sam's help.

This one caught a lot of people off guard because the original version of this credit was supposed to run through the end of 2032. Then the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed July 4, 2025, moved the goalposts hard. It killed the $7,500 new-vehicle purchase credit for anything acquired after September 30, 2025, and it set a hard stop for the charger installation credit at June 30, 2026. There's no phase-down, no partial credit for chargers placed in service after that date. It just ends, and as of this writing no bill to extend it has gained any traction in Congress.

That matters here in Minnesota because we've got a decent number of homeowners and small businesses who've been putting off a charger install waiting to "do it before the deadline." If that's you and you missed it, don't panic. There's still real money on the table, just not from the IRS anymore.

What Actually Expired, and What Didn't

Section 30C, the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, covered 30% of the cost of hardware and installation for EV charging equipment. For a homeowner in an eligible census tract, that was up to $1,000. For a business installing charging equipment at a commercial property, it topped out at $100,000 per charging port. Both versions ran out on the same date, June 30, 2026.

What didn't expire is anything at the state or utility level. Minnesota's own EV purchase rebate program through the Department of Commerce ran dry a while back and stopped taking new applications, so that one's gone too if you're cross-shopping incentives. But utility-level charger rebates are a separate pot of money entirely, funded by the utilities themselves, not the federal government, and most of those programs are still open for business.

Minnesota Utility Rebates Are Still Standing

This is the part worth paying attention to. Xcel Energy, which serves most of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro, still offers an EV Charger and Wiring rebate: up to $500 standard, and up to $1,300 for income-qualified households, provided you enroll in one of their off-peak charging programs and have a licensed electrician handle the wiring. Connexus Energy customers can get up to 50% of their charger and installation cost back, capped at $500. Beyond the big utilities, there are more than 40 electric cooperatives and municipal utilities across Minnesota running their own Level 2 charger rebates, generally somewhere between $150 and $800 depending on the provider and whether the charger is a WiFi-connected "smart" model.

None of these programs are federal, so none of them share the same expiration date. But they're not permanent either. Utility rebate budgets get set annually and some run out of funding before the year is over, so it's worth confirming your specific utility's program status before you commit to a purchase, not after.

Is a Home Charger Still Worth It Without the Tax Credit?

Short answer: usually, yes. A straightforward Level 2 charger install in a Twin Cities home with an attached garage and a modern 200-amp panel typically runs somewhere in the $800 to $2,500 range depending on how far the wire has to travel from your panel. If your home was built before 1990, there's a decent chance you're still running a 100-amp service, and roughly 30% of installs in older Minneapolis and St. Paul homes end up needing a panel upgrade to 200 amps before that 40 or 50-amp EV circuit can be added safely, which adds cost on top of the charger itself.

Losing the $1,000 federal credit stings, but it's not what makes or breaks the math on a home charger. What actually matters more is getting an accurate load calculation done up front, so you're not surprised mid-project by a panel that can't handle the new circuit. That's a job for a licensed electrician, not a guess based on the age of your breaker box.

Businesses and Fleets: A Bigger Number Just Disappeared

The commercial side of this stings more, frankly. A business installing charging infrastructure for a fleet, employee parking, or a customer-facing lot could have claimed up to $100,000 per port under the old commercial version of 30C. That's gone as of June 30, 2026, for anything placed in service after the deadline. If you're a property manager, fleet operator, or facilities director who was mid-planning on a multi-port site, it's worth revisiting the project economics with your accountant now that the federal piece is off the table.

It doesn't mean the project doesn't make sense anymore. Workplace and fleet charging still drives real value through employee retention, tenant demand, and in some cases utility demand-response incentives that businesses can enroll in separately. If you're weighing a commercial charging project, get a real quote before assuming the numbers don't work without the federal credit.

What to Check Before You Call for a Quote

Minnesota's updated 2026 electrical code took effect August 17, and permitting and inspection requirements for new circuits, including EV charger circuits, fall under that code now. Any licensed electrician pulling a permit in the Twin Cities metro should already be building that into the job, but it's one more reason not to have a handyman or an unlicensed contractor touch this kind of work. If a rebate application later asks for proof a licensed electrician performed the work, and it wasn't, that rebate gets denied.

  • Check whether your utility still has an active charger rebate and what enrollment it requires (many need you on a time-of-use or off-peak rate)
  • Note your panel's rated amperage, usually printed on the main breaker
  • Know roughly how far your garage or parking area sits from your electrical panel
